I'll let Cloud mostly speak about the server development side of things since he has spent more time focusing on at aspect. The only thing I've done recently is add collision maps so Cloud could get pathing working for NPCs. Next stages for server development is getting players online API up and reporting on the website. After that getting out of alpha mode and saving players progress in game.

At lot of technology has changed since we first started. Java is now phased out of browsers. The easy path of web applets or even web start for application distribution are things of the past. The idea here is to have a seamless way to update the client.
